SBTC 2026

Welcome to the new 2026 inaugural club newsletter

We plan to post upcoming events, recent participation, and perhaps member profiles. If you would like to have your results posted or have suggestions for content, you are encouraged to contact the team.

The first newly revived club meeting took place at Rusty’s on Hollister on Jan 22. A good 40-50 people joined. There was pizza and socializing and presentations.

New president, John Nelson made some introductory comments. Joe Howell talked about the Reef & Run ocean swim events that take place on Thursday evenings in the summer. Then special guest, former ocean swim champion and swim coach Gerry Rodrigues took the floor for some Q&A regarding swim technique and training. Gerry has coached multiple professional triathletes and is one of the co-founders of the Tower 26 club in the LA area. Tower 26 has a local contingent that trains at the San Marcos High School pool.

Next Club Meeting

Thursday 2/26 at 6:30 at Rusty’s at 4880 Hollister.

The guest speaker will be Mark Allen, 6-time Ironman Kona winner, including the legendary 1989 “Iron War”, arguably one the best long distance triathletes of all time, with many interesting thoughts on training psychology.  Also speaking will be Jason Rizzi, Chief Development Officer USA Triathlon Foundation. Hope to see you there.

Kendra’s Race

UCSB hosted Kendra’s Race, an intercollegiate Sprint triathlon at Campus Point on Jan 8. Club members: Jon Martin, Eric Heindl, Bob deLoe, Catherine Gloster and Sergio Angulo as well as Cara Winnewisser, Stephanie Boshers and Eddy Winnewisser in a relay team, braved the February ocean (actually was a reported balmy 61F). Teams from Cal Poly SLO, UCI, UCSD, UCLA, USC and others took part. This race typically takes place in November, but was delayed this year because of rain. The collegiate men and then women started first, followed by the open category age groupers. The swim entry was challenging because of rocks and surf, and the exit because of a strong current and then a climb up the stairs. The bike course was flat, but crowded on the bike path. The run was mostly flat around the lagoon with a few good short climbs. Good performances all around.

Note that some of the posted swim times seem to actually be swim+bike.
Subtract accordingly to get the swim time.

Doc Flanigan Memorial Ride

Please join a memorial ride for Doc which will start at Stow House (the traditional starting place for the MNTT)  at 9:00AM on Sunday morning, February 22. We will all ride together in a single group for the 10-mile ride around the course that Doc designed and we have enjoyed all these years. Come a bit early for a coffee and pastry, at 8:30 or so, ready to ride. Dianne – Doc’s wife, coxswain, time trial co-coordinator and constant companion – will see us off at 9AM at the TT start. The pace will be slow and controlled; all are welcome to join as we celebrate Doc Flanigan.
